This project focuses on re-imagining the public spaces of our courthouses, which are often intimidating to users.
This court experience redesign explores the “user journey” for opportunities to create a more just experience for users of the Bronx Housing Court.
10 opportunities for intervention, using a data-driven, user-centeric approach:
Concessions / Family Area -- Daycares & family areas provided for court clients
Art / Gardens / Decor -- Creating a more inviting space using design principles such as multiculturalism, biophilia & domesticity
Tenant / Counsel Intake -- Private meeting pods that plaintiffs, defendants, lawyers, tenants, landlords etc. meet before/after the trial
Courtroom -- Complete redesign of the courtroom layout
Spaces for Judges & Staff -- Private back rooms for judges and staff to relax in before or after a shift/trial
Public Spaces -- Creating internal & external spaces for public & private users
Security -- Reducing wait times & a less daunting feel
Wayfinding -- More clarified indications & additional languages provided
Help Centers / Clerks -- Reception & information centers provided
Teleconferencing -- Private rooms that judges stay in to log on to virtual trials
This project focuses on re-imagining the public spaces of our courthouses, which are often intimidating to users. By using the design principles of as multiculturalism, biophilia and domesticity, the design creates a safe and comfortable environment. Our mission is to create a space that makes users feel welcome and supported, acknowledging the time before the hearing is critical to just outcomes in the court room.
